Or maybe not so much, these two handsome men are actually brothers! But Daniel and Joel share a lot more than just a family name, both:
– Emotional players
– Motivation to make learning more fun
Blacksmith’s Angel
Blacksmithing – crafting great learning experiences
Contrary to their own experience at a German university, Joel and Daniel firmly believe in this “Learning can and should be an enjoyable thing.”

Armed with knowledge about human motivation, gameplay, and UX design, they Started a consulting business. It is called clever blacksmithing. A place where powerful things are forged, by the Schmidt brothers.
They started working for them The first client only two days after launch!
Daniel Schmidt

Daniel, 29, is the older brother of the two.
“In the past years, I have worked with many organizations in this field where two things that are close to my heart come together: anonymous culture and Christianity.”
As a leading force like Allianzmission and MainQuest, it is It has good relations and is respected all over Germany.
What is it like to work with your brother?
“I’ve worked with a lot of different teams and fortunately so far we’ve always been able to start a family like culture. But working with your actual brother is really different.
The age difference between me and Joel is quite large, 7.5 years. So when I was growing up and facing early adult struggles, Joel was still a kid.
In recent years, we have become very close to each other, and Established a deep sense of openness and trust. Which I think is absolutely necessary because our working relationship is intertwined with our family relationship.”
How did Octalysis Prime help you start a business?
Daniel joined Octalysis Prime after reading Yu-kai’s Actionable Gamification.
“I spent six years studying and researching on topics such as motivational psychology and game design at university. But my understanding of these topics reached a new level by delving into Yo-kai’s work.. It’s actually even bigger than that, opening up a whole new world!
There are also a lot of advantages in being a part of the OP Slack community. There are some people in society who only breathe valuable information. And it’s great to share different perspectives with like-minded people.
One of the recurring lessons that popped into my mind was always going back to thinking about motivation – the difference between human-centered design and job-centered design.. To answer the question: Joining Octalysis Prime helped with everything.
Can you tell us something about your Octalysis certification?
Daniel states that it is not just about certifications, as his primary focus is on the intrinsic motivation to learn. But he’s so glad he made the effort to get His prestigious Octalysis Level 1 certification:

“It is very helpful to take something you think you know and study well, and then To have someone who really knows them look at your work We give you feedback that brings you back to reality.
Since the quality limits required for different certification levels are really enforced, it has real value. It provides reassurance to myself that I have learned something good.
I know so many people who have been able to get their college degree that I would never take any advice from them. Obtaining Octalesis certifications really means something.”
Fun fact
To conclude the interview, Daniel shared an interesting story About Octalysis Prime:
He once spent half an hour clicking on the “defend the castle” button in the challenge section of the island exactly 100 times. He made this dragon fly away to patrol a hundred times, but unfortunately it didn’t reveal any Easter eggs.
“You all can thank me for testing this out so you don’t have to!”

Part 2 coming soon!
Many thanks to Daniel for the interview! Read more about Joel Schmidt’s perspective in Part Two. Spoiler alert: “Joel is like a questioner“.
