Last year, in December, the Seminole tribe was forced to halt operations of the Hard Rock Sports Book in Florida. After a ruling the extended agreement that allowed sports betting in the country was deemed illegal.

The agreement gave the tribe sole control of this form of betting for the next thirty years and was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.. This soon led to controversy as state bettors were allowed to place online bets anywhere within Florida as long as those bets were processed through computer servers on tribal property.

On November 22, a judge ruled that the agreement was illegal, arguing that it violated the federal Indian gambling law. US District Judge Dabney Friedrich called it a “fantasy,” arguing that treating bets on tribal property does not equal betting on tribal lands.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the US federal government intends to appeal a federal court decision that struck down the agreement. Meanwhile, the Seminole Tribe of Florida has already filed its own appeal with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
