Port Madison Enterprises, the commercial arm of the Suquamish tribe, and sports betting giant FanDuel, on Friday held the grand opening of the new FanDuel Sportsbook at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort in Suquamish, Washington.. “The launch of sports betting in these tribal casinos in Washington state is another step forward on the path towards greater self-determination for the tribes of Washington state,” said Rebecca George, CEO. From the Washington Indian Game Association (WIGA). “Our tribes depend on the revenue our casinos generate to fund critical public services to some of the historically marginalized and underserved communities in Washington State.”
George further said that tribal games “are safe, responsible and benefit communities across Washington” under a system that “strikes the right balance.” According to her, through pacts, additional tribal investments, and community partnerships, tribes have minimized the “negative social consequences” that might result from gambling. However, she now sees this under threat.
“A private gambling company established in Las Vegas is now seeking to destroy the safe and proven tribal gaming system that we have put in place over the past three decades,” said the CEO.. “Their federal lawsuit, which seeks to abolish carefully negotiated tribal gambling pacts over three decades between tribes and state leaders, would cause irreparable harm not only to historically marginalized tribal communities but to the general public as well.”
According to WIGA, The lawsuit seeks to “extend gaming beyond sports betting,” as it seeks to offer multiple new forms of accessible gaming.. The trade association warns that “this is an attempt to force a massive expansion of gambling in the state of Washington against the will of the public and the partisan decisions of the legislators they represent.”
“Tribes in Washington State are committed to conducting sports betting and other forms of gaming safely and responsibly, and we stand united in opposing any such attempt This attempt is to undermine the Indian Games Regulatory Act, the tribal agreements, and what the tribes have worked so hard to build over decades of effort.”
The company that WIGA and George are alluding to is Maverick Gaming, which owns several cardrooms across the state. While tribal casinos have been given the green light for sports, card rooms are not allowed.
“Obviously there’s room for both of us,” says CEO Eric Pearson.according to Until the news. “This is not an either-or option. These are not the clans to have or the cardrooms to have. There is room for both of us and both of us will thrive and benefit. We look forward to the day Maverick Gaming is a participant in our state’s commercial sports betting.”
The company filed a lawsuit again in January in US District Court. Maverick Gaming is challenging India’s gaming regulation law, claiming that it gave tribal casinos a monopoly on sports betting in the state.
